Vicks Vaporizer with Night-Light Review

Vicks Vaporizer with Night-Light

I have this exact unit. It works constantly, with no problems at all.
A pinch of salt, and it steams away and shuts off automatically when low.
I love the simplicity of this unit.
After years of using all the different fancy new kinds of humidifiers that need constant cleaning and special filters and antibacterial crap, this is very nice. No muss, no fuss, just moisture in the air.
The black stuff in the water is normal and is not gross, as someone said in another review.

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier Review

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first air purifier I ever purchased. I think the full list price of $900 is outrageous and would not have bought it at full price for what is almost a big computer case with a high quality fan and very high quality HEPA filters. However, I jumped at the chance to buy it at the 50% off sale price or $450. So far it's working really well. It's a bit bulky, but then all good air purifiers are because the filters need enough surface area to work properly. It achieves low power consumption largely by having a large filter area so that the air velocity can be kept low while keeping the air volume high. Low air velocity translates to lower energy consumption and lower noise.
At 10 Watts on the high setting, even if I run it 24/7, the energy consumption will be only $1 a month and my electricity rate in California is a high 14 cents per kWh.
The power switch's placement at foot level is very inconvenient. Unless you leave the unit on for 24 hours a day, everyday, you'll find it a chore to have to constantly bend down to access the switch.
The outside of the product's packaging, as well as all the websites I've visited(including Amazon), says the filters last up to 12 months. That's actually incorrect advertising. The manual says for "optimal use" the filters should be changed every six months. I've noticed the air flow decreased noticeably after 2 months of use at 12 hours a day. Furthermore, in order for the 10-year warranty to be valid, Blueair requires the buyer to change the filters every six months and to send in the registration as explicitly stated in the manual. Of course, the question is whether Blueair will require proof that the user bought new filters every six months when it comes time for warranty work. Oh, another thing, the warranty is only 10 years, not "lifetime" as the websites state, another incorrect advertisement!
The filters cost $100 per set. So if I change the filters religiously every 6 months, the filters alone will cost $200 a year, plus $12 a year for electricity. With charcoal, the operating cost will exceed $300 a year. Ouch! Also, keep in mind that this is just the operating cost for one large room (up to 300 sq. ft.) and not for the whole house.
It's quiet enough even on high that I can sleep with it on high, and on the low setting, it sounds about as loud as a somewhat loud computer case fan and is mostly unobtrusive. The fan noise is not unpleasant. In fact, I sometimes use it on the high setting as a passable white noise machine to drown out ambient noises when I go to sleep.
The only true negative with this unit is it's exclusively a particulates filter. It has no charcoal to absorb odor. In order for the purifier to be effective, I need to keep my bedroom door closed. When the filters were new, the air got stuffy overnight when I kept the door closed. I think it was the smell of the new filters, but after a couple of weeks, the stuffy smell went away. For those who want to filter odor, Blueair makes Smokestop filters include charcoal. The Smokestop filters cost almost twice as much as the regular Eco10 filters and are also not as readily available.
It's interesting to note that the Eco10 has virtually the same 250 CFM rating as the IQAir Heatlh Pro and practically the same percentage particulate reduction. Therefore the two units should have about the same area coverage rating. But the IQAir claims effective up to 900 sq. feet, whereas the Blueair Eco10 only claims 300 sq. ft. with 6 air changes per hour(which is the generally recommended rate by experts). This tells me the IQAir's capacity is overrated vs. the conservative rating of the Eco10. I tried to find the CADR rating of the IQAir but couldn't find it anywhere. Based on the fact that the Blueair Eco10 has a CADR of about 200, I surmise the IQAir has similar CADR. I just don't see how a 200 CADR unit can cover 900 sq. ft. Maybe that's why Consumer Report gave the IQAir a low rating.
Summary:
Pluses: very quiet compared to other brands, very effective filtration down to 0.1 micron at 99.97% efficiency, good air flow of around 250 CFM, good CADR rating of around 200, ultra low electricity consumption.
Minuses: short filter life, very high operating costs because of short filter life and expensive filters, no charcoal to absorb odors, unless you opt for the even more expensive Smokestop filters.
Bottomline: Quiet unit and very energy efficient, BUT the energy savings will not even come close to offsetting the high operating costs associated with the frequent changes of expensive filters.

Combining ease of use with an environmentally friendly design, this unique air purifier delivers cleaner, healthier indoor air for rooms measuring approximating 20 by 15 feet. Its front-access control knob allows for selecting from two speeds--HEPA silent or Max airflow. Even on "Max airflow" the air purifier delivers whisper-quiet operation at just 49 db. The unit also provides an ultra-efficient EC fan motor and HEPASilent technology, which uses electrostatic and mechanical filtration to quickly and quietly capture 99.97-percent of particles down to 0.1 micron in size, including allergens such as pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores, and pet-dander particles. Three HEPASilent filters come included.
Thanks to Blueair's commitment to the environment, standard triclosan-coated paper or glass filter fibers have been replaced with safer, nontoxic polypropylene, one of the least harmful plastics, which produces only carbon dioxide and water as it decomposes, which means no toxins released into landfills or the air. Polypropylene's also waterproof, so the air filter naturally resists contamination from bacteria, viruses, and mold, without chemical additives or washes. The 100-percent recyclable filter should be replaced once a year, but vacuuming the purifier's main filter unit can help prolong filter life. The air purifier also comes with four pre-filters that trap large particles and ensure long-lasting performance. Other highlights include an award-winning Swedish design, smooth-rolling casters, and a CADR of 190 for smoke, 195 for dust, and 200 for pollen.
Furthermore, the purifier uses up to 95-percent less energy than other comparable air cleaners. In fact, it's more than earned its Energy Star rating. Even on high speed, the unit runs on just 10 watts of power, making it nearly 10 times more energy efficient than the minimum performance requirements established by the EPA's Energy Star program. Choosing Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as on greenhouse gas emissions. All of which means purified indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. The air purifier measures 26 by 20 by 13 inches and carries a limited lifetime warranty.

I purchased the Honywell HCM-645 as a replacemnt for the Honeywell HCM-360.
I bought the #360 in Oct. 2005, and after about 4 weeks of operation the motor started to make a really bad rattling sound, Oh crap where is the receipt????? Can't find it!!!! Well, knowing that most stores won't return anything without a receipt if it's been used, I figured I would have to take advantage of the 5 year warrenty and contact the mfg. for a replacement. In the meantime I can't be without a humidifier so I went out and bought another one, same Mfg. (Honeywell)but a differant model to be on the safe side thinking if I go differant I shouldn't have any trouble......THINK AGAIN!!!!
I bought the HCM-645 on 11-15-05 and on this day 11-29-05, yes thats right 13 days later.....This motor has started to rattle, not quite as loud as the other but that won't last long.
I called the Mfg. about the one I had no receipt for and they wanted to charge me $10.00 for warrenty processing and I was to pay shipping cost both ways, estimated shipping cost would be $20.00 so for $30.00 they would send me a new humidifer. I paid $32.99 orginally does this make sense????. Well, I took the information on returning only to hang up the phone and call Wal-Mart just to see if they would take it back. Guess what? They had no problem in returning it for store credit and also took back the extra filters I purhased.
So my thought on Honeywell Humidifers, BUYER BEWARE, something is definatly wrong with the components in the motor operation in 2004 and 2005 models

Eureka 3684F Pet Lover Mighty Mite Review

Eureka 3684F Pet Lover Mighty Mite
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Mighty Mite is a decent vacuum cleaner, especially for the money. I've been through 3 vacuums in 2 years, and I know junk when I see it now. And, for the most part, the Mighty Mite isn't junk.
Pros: It is very lightweight, has good reach with the telescoping pole, decent suction, and the pet hair attachment seems to work fine on my sofa and rugs. The HEPA filter is a definite plus and my hope is that the quantity of house dust will be seriously lowered. It is easy to move, but could use a longer cord than 20 ft.
Cons: The instructions don't even MENTION the pet hair attachment! The only references are on the box it comes in. The suction is adjusted by a rotating ring on the handle, exactly where you hand goes. So, if you accidentally move it to a more closed position while your hand is there, your skin gets sucked in with it. All the attachments do NOT go on the canister. There is provision for one small attachment and the crevice tool onboard. Everything else has to go elsewhere. Plus there is no easy way to deal with the hoses and telescoping rod. They don't fit together any special way and won't stand up. The power cord winds up underneath the vacuum and the plug should clip on to the cord. But, the clip on the plug doesn't actually fit over the cord. It is too small and too tight and makes indentations deeply into the cord, so you can't really safely use that 'feature'.
Sometimes, you have to wonder if the manufacturer ever even tried out the machine themselves. For example, the reason this is lightweight is that it uses incredible flimsy plastic hose. I suspect you could poke a finger through it if you tried hard enough. And, the canister itself is also plastic. That isn't theoretically bad, but what happens is, in a static-y environment, the hair and dust you are trying to get rid of is attracted to the hose and canister! So, you end up with a cleaner house and a vacuum completely covered in hairs and dust. That 'feature' isn't mentioned on the box...
Overall, I like this, in spite of all the negatives. Longevity is a bit of concern for the tools and hose, but it has suction, the disposable bag makes for a cleaner house, it is very easy to carry up and down the stairs and has a long enough reach to reach everywhere in my old house. I'm going to keep it...

Other features include Arm & Hammer odor-eliminating dust bags (1 included), a telescoping wand to reach tall, out-of-the-way spots, 20-foot cord length, 12 amps of power, and a crevice tool. My wife and I moved to Illinois from South Florida in June. Since November I had really noticed how much drier it is in Illinois, especially at night with the heat on full blast. We purchased this humidifier and have been running it for about a week. It has been awesome. If you can deal with having to refill every night before bed, then you'll enjoy this piece of electronics. All dryness that I had to deal with at night before we got this is gone. It's pretty sweet. A night light that changes from green to blue is nice and relaxing. Not overwhelming unless you are a pitch black sleeper. It offers a bunch of settings, has an ionizer and allows you to adjust the humidity. I researched this pretty hard and it seemed like this would be the best bang for the buck and so far it is. For 43 bucks and free shipping you can't beat it. I'll do a follow-up in a few months, but so far so good. It's got my blessing.

LightAir IonFlow 50 Surface Air Purifier Review

LightAir IonFlow 50 Surface Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I give the bulk of the review, I will just say that after we have had this ionizer on for several days, no one in my house can tell that it does anything at all, and no noticeable change in air quality has been observed. That's enough anecdotal evidence.
If you will observe the picture at the top of the page, you will note the wider portion of the cylinder, right in the middle section. This silver colored section of the "purifier" is claimed to emit negative ions, which supposedly capture the positive ions in the air, because air impurities are positive ions (a myth). This relies on a general ion myth: negative ions good, positive ions bad. Also, if the device generates negative ions, it is also generating positive ions (possibly producing a positively charged ion collector claimed by the company).
Some quotes from the manufacturer's materials to demonstrate their views on chemistry, which you can also read on this Amazon page:
"This large amount of negative ions balances out the overdose of positive ions in indoor air, a balance that is proven to be good for our health. Even more important is its capacity to distribute the negative charge throughout the room and collect particles which is directly related to the large production of negative ions."
"Most harmful pollution generated both by indoor and outdoor sources is positively charged."
"The negative ions attach to the positively charged, harmful particles in the air, such as from dust, pollen allergens, bacteria, mould, pet dander, viruses etc."
"The positively charged collector attracts the particles and leaves the air clean." (There must be an assumption of not only neutralization of the harmful positively charged pollution, but enough negative ions bonding to the particles to give a net negative charge, in order for those particles to be attracted to the collector, unless they meant something entirely different, which was not explained.)
A little aside at this point from the EPA:
"An ionizer is a device that disperses negatively (and/or positively) charged ions into the air. These ions attach to particles in the air giving them a negative (or positive) charge so that the particles may attach to nearby surfaces such as walls or furniture, or attach to one another and settle out of the air. In recent experiments, ionizers were found to be less effective in removing particles of dust, tobacco smoke, pollen or fungal spores than either high efficiency particle filters or electrostatic precipitators. (Shaughnessy et al., 1994; Pierce, et al., 1996). However, it is apparent from other experiments that the effectiveness of particle air cleaners, including electrostatic precipitators, ion generators, or pleated filters varies widely (U.S. EPA, 1995)."
So, by using a little popular mythology that has no solid, documented, scientific evidence, a company can produce a device like this and sell it for the price you see. That is positively electrifying.
I have found at least one benefit to the device, however. If one remembers the static electricity that remains on the exterior of a television screen after turning off the television (of the CRT type), that is the feel of the air very close to the silver ion generator. If one comes in contact with the generator, a very slight electric shock will ensue, the power of which is approximately 8% of a 1.5v battery (according to the company). This can actually provide entertainment for curious children.
It's a good thing I received one for free evaluation, because personally, I would never pay a single penny for one of these.

With its attractive, award-winning design, this air purifier delivers ideal results for people suffering from asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems, as well as those who simply care about the air quality of their home environment. The unit effectively eliminates more than 99 percent of the smallest airborne pollutant particles (size 0.01-1.0 microns)--including dust, smoke, pollen allergens, bacteria, viruses, fungus, mold, pet dander, and more--in less than five hours. It removes the smallest particles (nano particles below 0.1 microns), which cause the most severe health problems, but also larger particles (1.0-25.0 microns) at a reasonable rate. Plus, it does not lose effect over time as filter-based air purifiers do. The air purifier handles rooms up to 540 square feet, and it's built to work continuously. The easy-to-maintain, economical air purifier requires no expensive filters to change. Instead, simply dismount the collector once every two weeks or when needed and wash it clean in hot water and dishwashing liquid. Other highlights of this product include ozone-free silent operation (less than 5 dB), energy efficiency at only 7 watts per hour, and a discreet light in its transparent base, which can be switched off at any time. The air purifier measures 7 by 7 by 22 inches and carries a one-year warranty. From the ManufacturerLightAir IonFlow 50 LightAir IonFlow 50 delivers with an eye-catching beauty probably the healthiest air in the world. It offers an outstanding combination of efficient, silent, ozone free, energy saving, and easy to use, economical operation. LightAir IonFlow 50 boasts stylish looks, features, and performance. Research and development shows that LightAir IonFlow 50 in continuous operation is extremely effective at eliminating the smallest airborne pollution particles (nano particles below 0.1 micron). These particles normally represent around 90 percent of all particles in the air and are considered to cause the most severe health problems. And, a LightAir air purifier does not lose effect over time like filter-based air purifiers do. Unbeatable Advantages Documented Performance LightAir Ion Flow 50 reaches high performance levels. LightAir uses its unique and patented technology. Instead of moving air through a filtration system, LightAir literally removes harmful particles from the air in a room, trapping them in a collector. When necessary the collector can be easily and rapidly removed and cleaned in hot water--no repeated, costly filter replacement. Traditional electrostatic and mechanical filter air purifiers quite often present performance based on the airflow at the highest air speed at an unacceptable noise level. The independent test from the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute was carried out in a closed test chamber with a regulated supply of smoke particles and showed the remarkable result of effectively eliminating practically all airborne particles (size 0.3-1.0 micron) in less than five hours. Tests show that LightAir IonFlow 50 is extremely effective eliminating the smallest particles (nano particles below 0.1 micron) which cause the most severe health problems. The extraordinary performance of LightAir IonFlow 50 air purifier is mainly due to its ability to generate enormous volumes of electrons forming a corresponding quantity of negative ions. In fact it generates more than 250,000 ions per cubic centimeter measured at a distance of one meter. This is a level that probably no other ionizer has ever reached before without serious side effects and without generating any ozone. This large amount of negative ions balances out the overdose of positive ions in indoor air, a balance that is proven to be good for our health. Even more important is its capacity to distribute the negative charge throughout the room and collect particles which is directly related to the large production of negative ions. How It Works Extensive Reserach. Decades of Development. The engineers at LightAir have been doing research on ion generators in Sweden for more than 25 years. They have developed sophisticated applications that have been used all over the world at military facilities, in the casino industry, the fruit and vegetable industry, horseracing stables, hospitals, and many more situations. During the last 10 years, scientists at LightAir have been focusing on research using ionization in air purification for home and office environment, which have resulted in the unique patented LightAir IonFlow Technology Tests conducted by the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute prove that LightAir Ion Flow 50 air purifier effectively eliminates practically all airborne pollution particles (size 0.3-1.0 micron) in less than five hours without generating any ozone. Jupiter Science Water Aquarius Alkaline Water Ionizer Review

Jupiter Science Water Aquarius Alkaline Water Ionizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an expensive item and I expected it to last longer than it did. we use it daily and found it great for not only increasing alkalinity of water but enriching the oxygen content of it. This is done by mechanical means... magnets I think which separate acidic and alkaline streams of water. the acidic stream goes back into your sink as an outflow hose. The literature says it's a temporary thing and is best to drink the water as soon as you filter it. And of course, it doesn't add anything to the water like trace minerals.
Now the bad news. We had it for 3 years and it is now dead. I imagine it has something to do with the mineral level in the water. We live in Dallas and you would think water mineral levels would be ok, but the sediment build up inside the water ionizer finally killed it. I used a water pump about 6 months ago to try to clean it out with vinegar because the water flow was down to almost nothing. This was recommended by a Jupiter Rep. It worked albeit with a new issue... it leaks rather profusely now from the bottom. Ok, I'll live with it. But lately it's not been turning on easily and finally last week it died. I've heard that some jupiter models now come with a longer warranty. If so that's good news and but I would still hesitate on recommending it.
After also testing other means of making water alkaline I've determined that it makes more sense to buy ionized water booster drops. Just search amazon, you'll find it. For about $20 you get a small bottle that boosts water's alkaline level to 9+ and is portable. Some drops also include beneficial trace minerals.
Now my regime is to fill up a large pitcher of filtered water, add ionized water booster drops, then add willards water (look it up too). Happy at last.

Are you tired of parts made of plastic and not real metal? This coffee maker is made of genuine brushed stainless. If the part on this machine looks like metal, it is metal. The overall look and style is very European, even the buttons and display are good quality and simple to use and understand. The carafe is stainless inside and out, and keeps the coffee hot for at least 4 hours. The water resevoir lifts out for easily filling from the tap, so you don't have to fill the carafe first and pour it into the machine. The resavoir has graduated markings. Also, the filter holder comes out for easy cleaning. The only quirk I found is that, as with other themal carafes, you have to pour slowly to keep from dripping. It also helps to read the manual that explains how far to unscrew the top before pouring to avoid drips.

Purchase requirements - Small - Lightweight - Powerful - Quiet - Long Hose
1.) Small - when I first received my shipment, I was a bit taken aback. The Box was 4'x2'x 1-1/2'. Gosh it was huge and a bit heavy (for a vac). Slowly I opened the package to find another box. A bit relieved, the size seemed a bit more appropriate. I quickly opened the box to find another box. Now we are talking - once this box was opened, I saw what I wanted - a small, good looking, lightweight vac! The Stainless Steel did give the vac a professional appearance.
2.) Lightweight - Definitely meets the bill. No larger in width and length than my keyboard, there will be no problem moving this vac about.
3.) Powerful - I didn't expect much from all the claims (4 horsepower and 95" of waterlift), but this little vac made me a believer in power. This is the first time I only needed to use the crevice tool for awkward corners. Those little pieces of fuzz and hairs that usually needed picked up with your fingers came right up. The seems in upholstery that filled with dust - clean!
4.) Quiet - My subjective is opinion says this machine is quiet for such a powerful vac. In fact, my IQAir Air Cleaner is louder. Switch the 2-speed switch to low (works similar to my old shop vac and this speed); now we are talking quiet!
5.) Long Hose - The 6.5 foot hose, lightweight and flexible does not make the grade. It's adequate for my purposes, but I may purchase a hose extension.
CONS:
1.) The dust bag is quite small (approx. 7" diameter by 5" deep) - this is to be expected in such a tiny package.
2.) Tools look and feel cheap, which is quite typical for all brands. They are however, effective.

Mr. Coffee ECM250 4-Cup Espresso/Cappuccino Maker Review

Mr. Coffee ECM250 4-Cup Espresso/Cappuccino Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received the Mr. Coffee Espresso/Cappuccino Maker as a gift. Obviously it's not going to produce the same results as some of the more expensive models but I think it works well enough for personal use. It's very simple to use-it only has two functions: brew or steam.
I noticed that several people commented about leaking and the instructions warn that this can occur if there are grounds around the top of the filter or if you over-fill the filter. The frothing arm is very short but I found a small frothing pitcher at World Market that works well. As far as worrying about aluminum in your espresso, the instructions also warn that you shouldn't leave water in the reservoir when you're not using the machine. The only other thing to remember is that you MUST de-pressurize the system before removing the filter holder or water reservoir cap!! To do this, unplug the machine, wait for it to cool off, then turn the knob to "steam" until you hear the hissing stop.
I think that for the price, this machine produces a nice cup of espresso in a relatively short amount of time.

Zojirushi EC-BD15BAFresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker Review

Zojirushi EC-BD15BAFresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've spent several weeks week getting to know the Zojirushi Fresh Brew... and for the most part, I'm quite pleased. It has some foibles [which I'll get to in a moment] but on the whole it's a very capable coffee brewer. More, it's one of the very few home models I know that can brew 8 cups of just-roasted coffee at a proper 2 tablespoons per cup ratio without fuss, and - this is important! - maintain proper brewing temperatures throughout the entire brew cycle.
The details...
Zoji has been making vacuum pots and the like for nearly 100 years, and they've been making an assortment of rice-cookers, tea brewers and hot water dispensers for decades. While this is, I believe, their first home coffee brewer, they've got more than a little experience in kitchen electrics. They've put that experience to good use.
If you've ever brewed up a thermos full of coffee using a big Melitta filter cone then this setup will look pretty familiar. For all intents and purposes, the Fresh Brew simply adds an automated hot water delivery system to the mix... with a few improvements.
Improvement number one: not only does this system brew into an all-stainless thermal carafe [no hot plate here, thankyouverymuch] but it also insulates the brew basket. What good is it, after all, to heat up all that water if it's just going to get cold while you're brewing? This is huge! This is important! This is... well, I'm excited about it, okay?
Improvement number two: the Fresh Brew features an accurate gauge of water volume. When it reads that you've got 8 cups of water in the brewer's reservoir, it means it. Mind you, we're talking 6 oz. cups of water -- that's the way the coffee world measures a cup [unless you're Bodum and then it's 4 oz.].
Improvement number three: the Fresh Brew is patient. The biggest pain about the manual pour-over method is that you've got to wait to add more water, especially if the coffee is really fresh. Fresh coffee blooms with its charge of CO2! Faced with a full basket of coffee that was literally fresh from the roaster the Zoji didn't overflow, nor did it heave grounds into the water dispensing shower-head. More, the grounds were thoroughly saturated; no dry spots.
So where's the foibles?
Like a great many autodrip brewers the feeder tube that comes from the Zoji's heating element to the shower-head takes a straight path right through the water reservoir. For most brewers this is a game-over situation... the heating element simply can't overcome the heat exchange that occurs en route to the brew-head. On the Zoji, the heating element *does* get hot enough... provided that the water you've placed in the reservoir is not *too* cold.Example A: In the office using the "unchilled" spigot on the water cooler, I draw off 48 ounces of water for the reservoir and brew a pot. Throughout the brew cycle water temperatures in the brew basket range between 195 and 200 degrees F. The result is a lovely pot of Ethiopian Yrgacheffe that is sweet, floral and lemony.
Example B: At home I draw off 48 ounces of water from the water filter in-line with the refridgerator. The temperature of the water in the reservoir is about 40 degrees F. and the resulting temperature in the brew basket never tops 185 degrees F. The result is an icky pot of the very same Yrgacheffe that is bitter, murky and flat.
The moral: mind your initial water temperature and you'll do just fine.
All in all, the Zojirushi Fresh Brew is capable of making 8 cups of coffee that's on a par with manual pourover methods. Better, really, as it insulates the brew-basket to better maintain water temperatures.

KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door Review

KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door

I want to hug this thing every morning! But I won't- that way lies madness. Besides, I don't think DH would like it. Why am I so happy? Because..I had a 25 year old, noisy Sub Zero for which I could no longer find parts. It had to go. Unfortunately, we had remodeled the kitchen around it. So I thought I was stuck with another Sub Zero. Why do I say "stuck"? Aren't Sub Zeros the very best? Well, call me a rube , but to me it was essentially a shinier, shallower, taller, louder version of my cheap Sears fridge in the basement. Not to mention that a new Sub Zero costs over $8000, for Pete's sake!
What to do? Enter the KitchenAid counter depth French door fridge. Fantastic. For about $6000 less I have a fridge that takes up less space but has more room inside.(It's magic!) The counter depth fits perfectly in the space where the Sub Zero loomed. The KitchenAid is pretty and quiet and well organized on the inside. Now I have a new, quiet, (did I mention quiet?) fridge with more room inside. It has an interior filtered water dispenser, an excellent deli drawer,(wide and shallow so you can see everything) see -thru veggie bins, and even a neat little scoop in the ice bin. The doors open and close independently of one another. I also like having two smaller doors instead of one heavy door. The water filter is within easy reach in the top of the fridge.
The freezer is also well organized. The ice bin can be rolled out of the way to make use of the space beneath. The freezer also has bins which might , for example, keep melted Popsicle goo from leaking all over the freezer and the floor and the ceiling beneath. Just in case.
AND my cabinet maker is going to put a new shelf in the space that opened up over the KitchenAid. (The Sub Zero was 12" inches taller). I finally have a place to store those huge trays my mother gave me for Christmas. More fridge taking up less space for less money- what's not to like?

Intex Pool Salt Water System Review

Intex Pool Salt Water System

We used this product all last summer and now are using it this summer. I can't say enought about how I love it!!! I have a 18x52 frame pool and this things works wonders. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. For my pool it takes 4 40lb bags of water softner salt pellets. I dump it in with pump running. It dissolves in about 2 hours with my 4000 gph intex pump (if your pool is 18" or larger always upgrade to the 4000 gph pump, you will be glad you did). After adding the salt about 3 hours later I turned on my chlorinator (if you have a smaller pump it will take a lot longer to mix the salt properly). Ran it for 8 hours the first day, just to build up the chlorine level then after that ran it for 6 hrs per day. It was an absolute dream. does exactly what it is supposed to do. The negative for me are as follows. If the power goes out you have to re-program it and you can't set a specific time. You just have to go out and turn it on the time of day you want it to turn on every day ( the reason this was annoying to me is that my breaker tends to trip every once in a while and it would screw up my schedule, but truly no big deal in the big picture). Secondly is toward the end of the summer my ph got out of wack and it left big deposits in the cholorinator to the point the water wouldn't flow through so it would automatically shut off. You just have to open it all up and get the deposit build up off of the coils, but it got annoying. This wasn't a problem with the chlorinator it was a problem with my pump not pumping like it should (upgraded to a larger pump and it took care of that) and the fact that I let my ph get out of wack. This year I plan on watching my ph better and just automatically cleaning the coils(it's not really a coil it is actually plates on the inside of the chlorinator) and checking them every other week. Even though it does have it's issues, it is the best thing that ever happened to my pool maintanance. Love it and would recommend it hands down. Just make sure you read all the instructions on how to run it and maintain it.

Intex Brand Pools and Intex Filter Pump System is designed for Intrex pool set 15' or larger with a properly matched and sized intex filter pump. It might also be compatible with other above ground pool system; however, we do not guaranteed the compatibility of the products. No redder, burning eyes, faded clothes, and pool liners. Simply hook the Intex saltwater generator into the pool's water flow as directed, add the specified amount of salt, and the Chlorine Generator will do the rest. The pool's water is converted to an effective algaecide - and since salt doesn't evaporate or dissipate as chlorine does, the constant addition of chemicals is a thing of the past. Keep your pool incredibly clean, crystal clear and fresh at all times.

Microbe-Lift-PL Gel Bacteria - 32 oz. Review

Microbe-Lift-PL Gel Bacteria - 32 oz.

....It had actually been a gel. It was actually a liquid. It went right through my Matala pads. I put a plastic bag under the pads to catch the liquid, but it made a mess anyway, and dripped off as I was taking to the waterfall weir. Certainly not what I expected, and will not purchase it again. I do not understand why they call it a gel when it is most certainly not.

RSVP International Endurance Stainless Steel Compost Pail 1-gal. Review

RSVP International Endurance Stainless Steel Compost Pail 1-gal.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this compost pail eight months ago, and am very happy I did. I have reduced the amount of weekly trash and in combination with a composter in my postage-stamp-size backyard, have set up a system where I'm making great compost for my potted plants, my little garden, my house plants. The compost pail, which sits on my kitchen counter, is virtually odorless (I haven't changed the filter yet--I just periodically rinse it).
The only reason I'm giving it four rather than five stars is that now, in the warmer months, it's attracting fruit flies. Every time I lift the lid a little swarm of them (5 or 6) flies out. They fly right back in, however, for it's Paradise Hotel for them. I don't think the charcoal filter does anything in terms of keeping them out. I may try a bit of mosquito netting and see if that helps.
As a noveau environmentalist, I'd advise against what the other reviewer suggests: don't use a plastic trash bag! That kind of defeats the purpose, for plastic is a big environmental problem. This pail is small and easy to clean. I just dump the scraps into my composter, then rinse the pail with water that I pour into the composter thereafter. If you're fussy, you can wash it with a bit of dish soap in the kitchen sink. Mine, thanks to coffee grounds (worms love 'em), fruit and veggie peelings, actually never gets at all funky.
Generally it's recommended that you not put any animal byproducts or grains in your compost--among other things, those are what usually makes things smelly and can also lead to disease or to strange things sprouting up in your soil.

Every gardener and ecology-minded citizen agrees that composting your kitchen scraps is a terrific idea. Unfortunately the reality of a stinky can of garbage on your counter can be pretty discouraging. Behold the eco-friendly, nose-friendly solution in the form of this sleek and stylish pail. Two charcoal filters in the lid keep odors under control. A convenient handle allows you tote a gallon's worth of garbage out to the compost heap where it belongs.
