(More customer reviews)I had been pricing and comparing the substantial number of humidifiers on the market and I am glad I settled on the Air-O-Swiss. Despite its higher price, I am quite satisfied with its functions, control, design and specifically, its quiet operation. I was looking to pay between $70-150 for a quiet, low-maintenance model to add humidity to my [very dry] 10x12' bedroom. I purchased it at a local store for the same price as listed on Amazon; I am glad I was able to see [and hear] this model in operation.

There is NO sound, even at the highest setting. I'm a light sleeper and cannot fathom a bedroom appliance that even approaches a dull hum.
The visible mist generated by this model is pleasant for me and my pets.
I have been refilling each morning, as I have had the device on a high setting and running nonstop.The compartment becomes about half-empty after a full day at this setting. Refilling is a snap.
The ability to have cool and warm settings is a big plus, since the jury is still out regarding the negatives and rewards of either mode.
The system has been running clean and I am certain this will continue to be the case with a modicum of effort. The cost of the filter and the silver stick is not intimidating and the recommended three-week maintenance check is reasonable.
The design is quite fetching. Minimalist and fetching.
I have it sitting on the floor and there is no dampness on the carpet as mentioned by owners of other brands. This tells me that this model is doing a good job of propelling the mist into the air.
My roommate recently paid $29 for a smaller Holmes humidifier. The Holmes is downright deafening and I am sure she would have paid the difference for an Air-O-Swiss. Silent operation is really important.
The only possible shortcoming is the hygrometer. It is not entirely intuitive: the machine is to shut off after the desired humidity percentage is met, yet I have yet to see the model shut itself off. Turning it off manually is not a big deal.
I took a big step purchasing an air purifier, but this purchase has made a significant difference in my bedtime and bedroom comfort. I've had some winter nights with seriously labored [allergy, smoke and pet-related] breathing but I find this device has given me a little peace of mind and tangible change.

(More customer reviews)After the breaking in period I have been able to get this skimmer to produce reasonably dry, dark skimmate. I don't have to adjust it much and it is surprisingly tolerant of small changes in the water level. It is working well for me in the refugium of a 30 gallon setup that I did not need aggressive skimming for. I don't notice too much of a microbubble problem but I don't have this in the main tank anyway. I think most people looking for a small skimmer for a nano system would be pleased with this product. The only downside is that the water inlet is not near the surface to help with surface skimming, but most skimmers overlook this.
I would like to add that although the description says "hang on tank or suction" it should more accurately say hang in tank or suction as it is an internal, submersible type skimmer.

* Size/Weight/Move-ability 10/10 -- I think the size and weight are fine, the unit is heavy (~50lbs) but not so heavy that you can't lift it from the box, it does have handles on the side to grab, and rolls in any direction on casters. It's not very large, about the size of a modern dehumidifier or mini-fridge
* Front Panel/Controls 5/10 -- The controls are straight forward and easy to use, the exception being that when you're in the "AUTO" mode you can not adjust the fan speed, it's a little odd. The big problem, and why I rate it 5/10 is that there are six SUPER BRIGHT LEDs on the front of the unit, as far as I can tell they serve no purpose whatsoever, they are simply there and they are on whenever the unit is on. When it's bright in the room it's not a big deal, but at night when you're trying to sleep this is a big issue, I'm probably going to have to cut out little wedges of electrical tape or something to stick over them. It comes with an IR remote that lets you control it as well. The display on the front will show the room temperature normally and when you are adjusting the temperature controls up and down it will change to show the desired temp for a few seconds. One note here is that the unit seems to stop cooling even when you're a good 5*F or so away from the desired temp--Example, it was 78* in my room last night and I set the unit for 73* it was running for a while but when the temp hit 77* the compressor shut off for a very long time and the room started to feel hot, temp went back up to 78* and it clicked back on... this may just be a quirk with my unit or something, but my window-mounted a/c will keep running until their ambient temp sensors equal the desired temp setting.
* Window Adapter/Hose 8/10 -- This is a single hose model, that means that it sucks air from the room to blow over the condenser (hot part) and then that air is blown outside; something to keep in mind is that you are sucking air from the room which means you are blowing your "conditioned" air outside as part of the normal process, as a result this unit will not cool a room as efficiently as a dual-hose model or a window/wall unit which both use outside air to cool the condenser--so this 10kBTU model will not cool a room as well as a 10kBTU window unit (it might be more comparable to a 7-8kBTU?). The window/hose adapters are decent quality, the only complaint I have is that I wish the adapter were "taller", my window sill is about 1" high, as a result the hose hits the sill before it the adapter hits the base, this isn't a big deal, but just wanted to note it. Another thing to note, some people complain about the window adapters not sealing very well--this one seems to do an OK job, the window just closes on the flat top of the adapter as a seal. The thing to keep in mind w/ these portable a/c's is that having a fantastic seal is not really expected or needed for the unit to operate, you get just as much air leakage around window mounted a/c's. The window adapter, hose adapter and hose are all well constructed and made of good materials--one tip: first screw the hose onto the unit, then screw the wide-mouth adapter thing onto the hose, THEN put the wide-mouth adapter into the window adapter, if you buy this you'll see what I mean :)
* Cooling/Air Output 10/10 -- Works great! Very cold air, and it blows the air fast out of the vent, much better then my window mounted units which feel like they just dribble out air sometimes
* Noise 7/10 -- First: It makes noise, all air conditioners do, if you need silence to sleep then you need another solution other then window/portable a/c's, I can sleep with the "white noise" of a fan/motor running. The unit is no louder then my 8kBTU window-mount unit when operating with and without it's compressor running; however, the reason I give it a 7/10 is that the unit tends to make more noise when the compressor turns on and off then my window unit does, in addition the compressor cycles on/off very often and for short periods, which exacerbates the issue. So far it has been waking me up, and that's not good, it remains to be seen if I can used to the noise, or this will become an awake-only unit.
* Draining 5/10 -- With low room humidity this unit should be able to exhaust most of the water out with the waste air, which means no draining... but with high humidity you need to drain the unit, this an issue on this unit because unlike other units it does not drain into a bucket which can be removed and dumped out. With this unit you need to put a "shallow pan", as the instructions say, under the drain cock and open it... well this pan needs to be really shallow (see my user submitted image) because the drain cock is only about 1-2" off the floor! I can envision this being a real nightmare to empty and I'm not looking forward to really humid daysOverall I think this is a decent portable a/c, and I'm hopeful that it will work out.
Summarized my main concerns are:
1) Does not have a bucket to empty, if it needs draining that will be very difficult w/o a bucket
2) Front Panel LEDs are super bright and always on, makes it difficult to sleep
3) Compressor makes more noise then expected when starting/stopping, this wakes me up at night
Summarized the pro's are:
1) Very good air output--lots of volume and pressure
2) Cold output! Great for spot cooling, move the unit near you and you'll freeze your butt off even if the rest of the room is warmer then you might like
3) Easy to move around on the casters
4) Reasonable price

But if you're looking for the same kind of robust-flavor, non-bitter coffee served at places like Starbucks, then you need a coffeemaker with special capabilities. This machine has those capabilities--and at an excellent price. Here's what I mean: 1. it has a 14-cup capacity. This is important because it means you can put more grounds into the filter without worrying about it overflowing. 2. Water temperature is hot and delivered though a "showerhead." 3. This machine has a special setting that dribbles the water more slowly, steeping the grounds. This last (and unique to this machine) feature is what gives you exceptionally robust and flavorful coffee.
I've been through several coffeemakers (all exiled to the attic), and this one is the best--better than makers costing three-times as much. I bought mine for $35 at Target.
True, the clock-setting mechanism is clunky, but how often do you use that? On the other hand, the design of the water-tank and glass pot is very convenient.
August 2010 Update: coffeemakes is still going strong. The manufacturer has a new web presence with links for service and parts.

(More customer reviews)Low ambient humidity (below 30%) is both uncomfortable and unhealthy - it dries out my sinuses, gives me a dry cough, make me more prone to respiratory infections, and it also gives me dermatitis & dander in my beard and scalp (which further exacerbates my cough). For that reason, I prefer to humidify my bedroom in wintertime. Why wintertime and not year round ? Because when the temperature outside drops, it's ability to hold moisture decreases very significantly. Anyway, for optimum comfort, I try to prevent my bedroom's humidity from dropping below 40% ... better still, 45%.
I recently purchased a BCM645.
PROs:
* Digital Hygrometer/Humidistat: This unit has a convenient and easy to read digital LCD display connected to a built-in hygrometer (to detect ambient humidity level), and a hydrostat (that allows you to set a desired minimum humidity for the unit to maintain ... sort of like a dehumidifier only in reverse). The fan can be set to low med or high on manual, or low med or high on automatic; and the target humidity can be set in increments of 1%.
* Humidification Method: This uses the wick (essentially a big filter sponge) + fan method, rather than a mister. The former is superior to the latter, because misters don't fully disperse their water into the air - which can cause the floor below it to become damp (and eventually damaged by) settling/condensing mist.
* Quiet: The fan on this is surprisingly quiet.
* Footprint: It's vertical tower design gives this unit a small footprint. CONS:
* WICKS WITH SHORT LIFESPAN: My model has 2 disposeable wicks. In my case, my first pair has only been in use for less than 2 weeks, and they're already working far less well and are signaling "change", and because they're fragile they can only be partially rinsed - they need to be replaced. Supposedly, the 657 has "permanent" wicks which are sturdier and can be reused more times ... I'll look into whether or not my 645 can use the 657's wicks, otherwise it's going to be a big headache and expense constantly replacing them.
* AWKWARD REFILLING: In order to refill the 1.3 gal tank, you must lift the tank out, carry it to a sink, hold it upside down, unscrew the refill/dispensing port, and hold it at an angle under a faucet until it's full ... then you have to clutch it against your chest with one hand while you use the other to turn off the faucet and reapply the fill cap - and no, it cant stand upside down on it's own, you MUST hold it during refilling, or it'll fall over and break. IMO, this is needlessly awkward, and if your sink lacks a deep basin equipped with a high-top faucet, you have to clutch the thing to your chest with one arm while ladling in water with the other. Two very simple design improvements would solve this problem: (1) recess the dispensing port (located on the bottom of the tank), so that when the tank is lifted out of the base, it can be stood upright on a counter without opening the dispenser valve on the bottom - that'd allow hands-free refilling; obviously the number (2) improvement would then be to relocate the refill port from the bottom of the unit to the top. With both improvements, you could then carry the tank to a sink, put it down where ever's convenient, and refill it ... no need to cradle it like a baby, or lift/support anything heavy. Doing that would also enable the manufacturer to increase the tank capacity (and runtime) and improve ergonomics (especially for older users, children, and amputees) at the same time.
* LACKS A TANK EMPTY SENSOR. Because this model lacks a tank-empty sensor, and because the hydrostat only cycles off the unit when the desired humidity level is reached, this unit FAILS to shut off if the tank runs out when the ambient humidity is below the set point. That's poor design and a waste of power. The manufacturer needs to add a tank empty sensor, and integrate it with the humidistat.
* CAPACITY: The manufacturer overstates this unit's capacity, claiming it can handle a 700sq foot room. It works well in small and mid-sized rooms, but to be realistic, you'd need 2-3 of these units to handle 700 sq feet on a really dry day. Also, 1.3 gals sounds like a lot, but on a really dry day (humidity% in the low/mid 20's), it'll exhaust that in under 10 hours, and because humid air sinks and dry air rises, you'd better keep the door of the room closed or it'll struggle to humidify the entire floor of your house, rather than just the one room you put it in.
* SPEED: This unit would benefit from a slightly larger wick, because on a really dry day, even in a 250 sq ft room, it has trouble maintaining 40% if the door is even a little bit ajar, or if the room is slightly drafty. Having a larger wick would also help to reduce the frequency it must be cleaned. I'm not looking forward to having to dismantle this unit weekly (to clean the wick and chamber), much less daily (as the manual suggests).
* Lacks UV: It'd be nice if the unit had a small UV bulb to kill bacteria in its evaporation reservoir.
Bottom line: Not recommended. I like the digital readout and controls, but this unit has too many ergonomic problems to recommend it - definitely look for the models that list reusable wick/filters. I got the wrong one ... don't make the same mistake.

TIPS REGARDING WICKS:
* PRICE This unit uses 2 sponge/wicks. The BWF-100 and HWF-100 are identical and interchangeble - when buying replacements, grab whichever brand is cheaper. I've seen prices for a 3pack (3 pairs of wicks) range from $5 to $16.
* RINSING: These wicks are rather fragile - resist the urge to wring them out when rinsing them, or you'll damage them. Instead, fill a sink with body-temperature water, let them soak for 5-10 mins (to let the deposits soften & par-dissolve), then gently press them flat (while submerged) 2-3 times. Then drain them (dont wring them) and reinstall. That should extend their performance by a few more days. Each subsequent rinse will yeild only half the benefit though. Evdentually, as the weave loses integrity, and deposits build, they'll just stop wicking and only get wet at the bottom, and they'll stay dry, shriveled and discolored up top.

This is the first machine that leaves my floor shiny and without a haze. It is worth it just for that!!! I also like the job it does on my lineoleum. The first couple of times I used it on what I thought were clean floors because I had recently mopped them, I was surprised at how dirty the water was. After using this as my primary means to clean my floors (two maybe three times a week depending on traffic and what is going on in my household) I notice that my floors not only look cleaner, but also feel much cleaner on the few occassions when I am not wearing house slippers. This is so much better than the regular mopping.
I have read other reviews on the flip-it regarding water being left on the floor; when that does happen, I just go back over that section so that it will be taken care of. For the most part I don't care about a little water on the floor because I would have so much more if I had the mop and bucket or used my steam vac. I am sold!

(More customer reviews)Well we tried the Gaggia Titanium and we did not like it at all (too loud, too big, odd settings).. This one, the gaggia Swing up is PERFECT! We can do Ristretto (tiny concentrated espresso). Noise level is very good. and the machine is too big at all! The only small minus is that the water tank coud have been a bit bigger but it would mean a bulkier machine (can't have it all). Access to the tank and the coffee dumps is very easy (much easier than the titanium model). I highly recommend it! oh I almost forgot the milk island attachment is SO good too! THe milk is froth to perfection, easy to do a creamy hot chocolate with it in less than a minute!

We purchased one of those 'flat back' heavy plastic rain barrels for water collection which has a screened rectangular opening on the top and nubs on the side. The side nubs are for use with a downspout diverter such as this one. You simply cut the end off of ONE of the nubs to allow water to flow into the barrel through it #the second nub is for connecting additional rain barrels in series#.
Installation of the diverter was simple. They say to make the first cut in the downspout #used a hacksaw# at the level where the lower port of the diverter is at the same level as the 'nub' on the rain barrel. This allows the rainwater to flow into the barrel up to that level but then it is diverted back to the downspout after that. The second cut in teh downspout is made 1.5 inches above the first cut and the diverter is inserted here. Inserting the diverter was a little tricky. It required pulling back the two sections of downspout, inserting the diverter in between them and pushing the two sections back to their original position. The diverter accomodates either 3X4" or 2X3" downspouts very effectively and there is a top and bottom cap if you have a 2X3 that makes the final look very neat and avoids the splashing that was mentioned in the review of a competitor's diverter. Once the diverter was in place, I secured the downspout with the original mounting bracket that I loosened before to allow me to pull the sections away from the wall of the house.
The product comes with a 20" black flexible hose that slips over the lower port (the upper port is factory sealed but the plastic obstruction can be pushed open to allow that port to function. It is threaded for use with a hose and also comes with a screw cap to keep it closed. I am not using the upper port). The other end of the black hose slips onto the 'nub' of the rain barrel. In our case, it was a loose fit so I secured it with a screw clamp available at any hardware store. That was it for the installation. It took about 20 minutes and only took that long because I had to work at getting the downspout to fit into the tight fitting connectors of the diverter.
How does it work? Great! We had a pretty hefty down pour that evening (1.25" of rain over about 30-45 minutes) and were able to fill up the barrel. In the heaviest part of the rain, the water was literally 'shooting' into the barrel through the nub in the side that is connected to the black hose.
The product is constructed of heavy white plastic, comes with instructions, a 20" black flexible hose, a screw cap for the upper port and a plastic cap for the lower port (for the winter season if you have to take the barrel 'off-line'). While I have never used any other diverter, I can highly recommend this one since it is well made, inexpensive and works very well.

Immediately the agent offered me a replacement of the motor, which I received and installed, only to find that the unit still only cleans one small pertion of the pool. Also, the hoses have spring many leaks, and the unit performs no better after repairing or replacing them. Bottom line: If you're willing to spend $300 for a new one each season, you'll be satisfied with this unit. I'm going to try another brand.

(More customer reviews)For a long time now, I've been hooked on single-cup brewing with a certain plastic cone-shaped mug-top device, but this little guy took me by surprise. My favorite thing about it is the plastic-inside-plastic design of the top, which all photos advertising this thing anywhere completely fail to demonstrate.
Coffee grinds go into the black container, the bottom of which is a flat metal mesh filter. A second plastic container slides tightly inside, without pressing down on the coffee, with an evenly perforated bottom. When you pour in the hot water, it drips through, distributes evenly through the grinds (no floating!), then filters to the included mug (or any mug).
With NO need for specialty paper filters or hand-washing (like more popular single-brew gadgets these days), and a price at or below ten bucks (if you can find it--if Amazon doesn't bring it back, check your favorite kitchen store or outlet), this is yet another nail in the coffin of electric auto-drip machines.I value a 'cons' section in all reviews, though:
1) I've had mine for a very short time. I can't say anything yet about durability, but if it seems to wear, stick to hand washing.
2) Includes one set of instructions on the box, and a completely different set on the product itself. Not sure about coffee:water ratio? Stick to a tablespoon for every 3oz H2O. Medium-fine grind.
3) Having to boil your own water. I've noticed this puts off a lot of auto-drip addicts. Once your water boils, though, let it rest for a few seconds before pouring. Or do what I do, and plug your kettle into the opposite wall of the kitchen. Walk it back leisurely. :)
4) You'll feel guilty when a guest comes over and you're just not in the mood to bust out your vacuum pot, and the thought of auto-drip now makes your tongue cry.
Yeah. I hate it when cons are just pros in disguise, too.

It also costs about ten times less then an espresso machine that probably won't make as good coffee, and eventualy will need repair. Bialetti has been making these things since the dawn of time and have it down to a science.
A few tips:
1. Grind coffee between medium and fine.
2. Don't pack coffee into basket like you do in an espresso machine.
3. Heat between medium and high heat.
4. Be careful not to have the handle be over the burner of flame.
5. NEVER WASH THE POT WITH DETERGENT. JUST RINSE AND DRY. The more you use the pot,the better the coffee becomes.
6. Before using for the first time season the pot. Make a pot of weak coffee and discard it.

I bought mine from Walmart recently and seems okay so far and a little noisy on the low speed more than I had hoped but all I care it keeps my family and all my pets healthier during the cold winter months. I have 90 days to return it to Walmart with my box and receipt should I not be happy with it or becomes defective within that 90 days from date of purchase. Also, the Hunter manufacturer gives you a five year warranty to return it to them (at your mailing cost) and they would send you back another unit at no cost to you. They just don't make things to last today like they used to. Just make sure whomever you buy this unit from you save your receipt and original box with bar code on it if possible for full refund, exchange or to mail back to the manufacturer.

1) The sides of the pool rise up as you fill the pool, therefore if you start the pool on an area with a slant you will have problems when the pool fills to the top--one side will have extra material because of the water level. The flatter the surface the better. You can make this work on ground that is somewhat uneven, but it take a lot of work.
2) You MUST make sure that bottom of the pool is pulled out to make a true circle. It is easy to be lazy with this because when there is no water in the pool it can look "good enough," but if you have an oval there is a chance that the water will push out and start to flow out once it is filled.
3) If you plan to put this away year after year get a ground cloth. If the pool is on grass the bottom is IMPOSSIBLE to clean. At the price, I would recommend throwing it out at the end of the season.
4) The pump is very basic. You will need to add chemicals to keep it clean. Get a net to clean the big stuff out.
For the $60-100 price tag you can't really go wrong if what you are looking for is some simple fun and a chance to cool off.

(More customer reviews)Instructions for set-up could be written with more clarity. Pool asslemby took longer than stated and getting the last fitting in place around the metal ring was trying! The biggest challenge was ground prep. I would suggest using blocks to place under the legs of the frame as the poles wanted to settle into the sand & ground, resulting in less than level set-up! The pump system just dosn't seem to have enough power to circulate the pool water and I have had some problems keeping the pool clear. The ladder that comes with the pool isn't all that sturdy. This is my first season with the pool so I can't comment on durrability yet. The pool was delivered promtly and intact. It is very spacious and we have had a family pool party with 5 adults and 3 children in the pool at one time and had more than enough room to swim & splash around (even had several pool rafts & toys. Overall I'm satisified with the pool and have no regrets buying it.

It is a tight fit, but I am pleased with it. It moves about twice as much water as the stock pump. I had a larger Quiet One in a 29 gallon reef tank for about 2 years with no problems. Great pumps!
