I've used Melafix for years to repair split caudal fins on my show guppies.
It doesn't effect biological filtration, so there's no need to remove carbon or filter floss from your filters when treating your fish. When you use this product you will notice that there will be bubbles on the water surface after you do a water change. This is normal and I think it may be due to water softening properties of the melafix. Guppies prefer slightly soft water anyways so there's a double benefit in my case. Melafix has quite a pungent odor that lingers as long as the dose is in the tank without dilution. It doesn't smell bad to me but you might not like it. I've tried researching getting a cheaper version of tea tree oil (main component of melafix), from a pharmaceutical or chemical company but there really is no cost savings so you might just as well buy the name brand stuff, right here. I use so much of it, I wish it came in gallon sized amounts. Remember: there's a fine line between overfeeding and tail rot. Use as directed and good luck healing your fish.
